A Closed Circuit TV employs the usage of Video cameras to capture and transmit the signal to a particular set of monitors. During Television broadcast the signal is openly transmitted over the public air waves and in CCTV, it is not. It is transmitted through a closed or restricted circuit or frequency. More often a closed circuit television (CCTV) system uses a hand-held video camera or one which is mounted on a stand to capture images onto a video or a television (TV) screen. Let’s take a brief look at the evolution of the Closed circuit television (CCTV) system.

CCTV History

This particular technology was originated way back in the year 1950 and consisted of a couple of low-resolution black and white cameras. It was then invented with the objective of replacing humans for defense or security surveillance. The second and an advanced version came out in the 1980s. The system included fixed cameras and video recorders. Even though the picture resolution was better than the first version, they were still in black and white. Color images and digital video recorders were introduced in the year 1990. However, there are still CCTV applications which use black and white cameras as they provide enhance resolution in low light or at night than the color cameras. With the advancement of technology cameras now are getting smaller and smaller.

Conventional transmission of video signal is done through 75 Ohm coaxial cables. The signal is transmitted as a normal composite video signal using the coaxial cables. But in some cases the system uses RF or Radio Frequency signals.

Now, let us take a look at some of the prevalent functions for CCTV surveillance systems:
Retail

    * CCTV’s can be installed in shops to monitor shoplifters, thieves and even to keep an eye on dishonest employees.
    * CCTV’s are often helpful while gathering evidence against fake accident claims.
    * CCTV’s can be employed to monitor product displays in stores which may be as far as hundreds of miles away.

Banks, Casinos, Hospitals and Universities

    * CCTV’s help to identify visitors and employees to institutions like Banks, Hospitals and Universities.
    * CCTV’s can avoid any thwarting theft attempts.
    * CCTV ensures proper security of the premises and parking facilities at these institutions.

Airports and Military Installations

    * CCTV’s are installed at strategic locations in and around Airports and Military establishments to watch for possible high hackers or terrorists

Industrial Plants

    * They are often used to observe and examine procedures that are remote from a master control room.
    * Hazardous work areas are usually monitored using a Closed circuit television system.

Sports Venues

    * Viewers or fans who are seated in cheaper or rear seats get a better view of the action on CCTV’s.

Home Surveillance

    * CCTV with video intercom doorbells helps to keep an eye on unwanted visitors.
    * With nanny cams we can observe and monitor how a caretaker is taking care of our children.

Conclusion

To sum up, video surveillance using Close circuit Television is now turning into one of the most effective tools available today, to prevent loss and to ensure safety and security.
