A person with autism spectrum disorder will also experience a huge impairment in their ability to communicate, whether verbally or non-verbally. The disorders involved can range from the more severe, such as autistic disorder, to the less sever, such as Asperger syndrome. With advances in diagnostic techniques, doctors can now identify an autism spectrum disorder when the child is as young as three years old, and sometimes even before. It has only been fairly recently in our history, around the bid twentieth century, that we had a name for this disorder that affects a great many people each year. As many as six out of every thousand children are expected to have a form of autism. This debilitating disorder can put strain on families and it is often difficult for the children to live fulfilled lives once they reach maturity. It was in the 1940's that the disorder got a name and became more widely known. Dr. Leo Kanner began studying socially impaired children and was the first to use the phrase early infantile autism. During this same time period, a scientist in Germany named Dr. Hans Asperger coined the phrase Asperger syndrome as a milder autism form. Both became widely known under the label of autism spectrum disorder. Diseases like this are usually characterized by several factors. Impaired communication skills is the first sign that your child may be autistic. If they have trouble making friends with other children or become very quiet in the presence of others then it may be the case. This is also shown through impaired social interactions. Repetitive behavior can also be a huge signal. If you find your child doing the same task or motion over and over again you may want to bring them in to see a specialist.
