There are many requirements that someone who wants to be an English as a Second Language teacher has to meet. This is especially true if that person wants to teach English as a Second Language, also known as ESL, in another country.

Before someone decides to teach English as a Second Language they should study all of the requirements for the position they would like to apply for. These requirements may not just be applicable in the United States or what ever country they reside. But there may also be additional requirements imposed by the entity that is doing the hiring in addition to any visa or work permit requirements imposed by the country they wish to work in.

For example, in the United States the applicant may learn they have to pay taxes both in the country where they are teaching and also in the United States to the IRS if they make over a certain amount annually. If this is the case, then they should contact a tax professional to advise them on how best to proceed so they don’t break any laws or acquire any penalties for unpaid taxes.

There may be other requirements that the country of residence imposes on a worker in another country. The applicant must be certain they have researched all of the implications of this working arrangement before they decide to apply for one of these ESL jobs. There could be repercussions if all of the requirements are not met such as being recalled back to the country of residence.

The next requirements to be met may be imposed by the entity that is doing the hiring to teach English. They most likely will require copies or originals of your college or university degree or degrees. If you are a licensed teacher then they may request original copies of these certificates.

If they have required completion of an ESL or TEFL certificate and if you have acquired said certificate they may ask for originals or copies of this document. Of course, if you are leaving your country of residence to teach, you will be required to produce a passport or passport number.

The hiring entity may ask for original documents or perhaps stamps by various officials attesting to the authenticity of all or any of these documents so they can be submitted to the country officials of the country where you plan to work.
This is called an Apostille or a certificate that any signatures are authentic and that the documents are authentic. It is an official seal that verifies authenticity. This would apply to any country that belongs to the multilateral treaty on the legislation of documents of the Hague Convention. There are a number of countries that signed this treaty. If the country where you plan to teach didn’t sign this treaty then you may need other documents.

You may need a work visa and have to get various immunizations before you can enter that country. If behooves you to thoroughly investigate all requirements and fulfill all of them.
