When you think about a job in the gardening industry you imagine someone that works with plants. This might be true but gardening covers more than just plants and flowers. People may not realize how someone that has a job in this industry might affect them. Once you discover what they are it might change your way of thinking.
When you go to the grocery store there is food available for you to purchase. How did it get there? Someone had to grow it and ship it so that you might buy it. When you cook your meals and need certain herbs and spices to flavor your food, how is it possible? These herbs were grown by people that work in a nursery or company that manufacturers them. Even your clothes, if you wear a lot of cotton material, are items that are grown. There would be no pretty flowers or plants to beautify or fill you with inspiration. It would be a very different world where many people would have few clothes and not a lot of food. If they were able to find food it would be poorly seasoned.
So who exactly are these people that provide a pivotal cog in the world? These are your landscapers, horticulturists, and gardeners. These people aren't afraid of getting dirty and doing actual manual labor. Many might work for themselves or others. There is a lot that goes into gardening. Some might have learned from their family members or had on the job training. One thing that is certain is that it is not as easy as it may look.
To be able to garden you will need to have a green thumb. Many people try and grow plants but find that they die. You have to provide just the perfect amount of water, light, and care to grow anything. For the more detailed horticultural jobs you will need an understanding of math, biology, and chemistry which may be provided at college. There is also the need to know details of how to prepare the soil to get it ready for planting as well as how to apply fertilizer. Fertilizer is needed if the soil is missing certain nutrients and minerals, but too much can kill any plant. One will even need to be able to know how to compost material, transplanting, and seeding.
