Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, you can now go on a winter caravan holiday. Caravanning makes for a fantastic winter break option, provided your van is warm enough and that you come prepared.
In the event that your caravan makes use of gas for cooking, heating and lighting, be sure to fill up with propane, rather than butane. Butane freezes up at minus four degrees Celsius. Be aware that these two gas types need their own specific adaptors.
Do not leave gas running all night, as this can be dangerous. Instead, consider investing in a low wattage electric heater if you plan on leaving the heating on overnight.
Wrap up warm. Take more blankets than you would usually use. High tog duvets can be invaluable, or alternatively, a warm sleeping back could be just the ticket.
Get yourself an awning. Not only will this help create extra space during the summer months, and during the winter months it will stop drafts from getting in. It can also double as an a space to leave wet shoes and outer wear.
Dress for the weather. Lots of thin layers are more effective than a few thick layers. Arm yourself with cosy socks, spare pairs of everything in case you get wet in the rain, and a waterproof, warm jacket.
Some modern caravans have the water tank housed in a special inner compartment intended to stop the water from freezing. If your caravan does not have this feature, take your own insulated tank that you can store inside your caravan in the event that weather gets bitterly cold. In cold conditions, your body heat, as well as showering and cooking can cause condensation to build up. Ensure that you open windows and doors regularly and also that keep your showering and kitchen areas ventilated. One thing that can help is to use moisture absorbing crystals to prevent the build up of condensation in the caravan.
Many caravan parks now stay open during the winter months, especially static caravan parks. Putting your caravan at a proper park or renting a static caravan enables you to have access to electricity, hot showers and other facilities that should make things a bit nicer for you.
This guide to mobile homes was written by Bill Hucklesby. For fantastic offers on static caravan sales, go to the Park Resorts website.
